Tenganan is a traditional village on the island of Bali. This village is located in Manggis District, Karangasem Regency in the east of the island of Bali. Tenganan can be reached from the Candi Dasa tourism site and is located approximately 10 kilometers from there.

Tenganan Village is one of the three Bali Aga villages, apart from Trunyan and Sembiran. Bali Aga is a village that still maintains a lifestyle whose community .structure refers to the traditional village customs inherited from their ancestors. The shape and size of the building and yard, the location of the building, and the location of the temple are made by following traditional rules that have been maintained for generations.

History : According to some versions of historical records, the word Tenganan comes from the word "tengah" or "ngatengahang" which means "moving to a deeper area". This word is related to the movement of village communities from coastal areas to residential areas in the middle of the hills, namely West Hill (Bukit Kauh) and East Hill (Bukit Kangin).

Another history says that the people of Tenganan came from Peneges Village (now Candi Dasa), which at that time was still part of the Belalu Kingdom. According to folklore, King Bedewa once lost one of his horses and people looked for it in the East. The horse was apparently found dead by Ki Patih Tunjung Biru, the king's confidant. For his loyalty, Ki Patih Tunjung Biru received the authority to regulate the area that had the scent of the horse's carcass. Ki Patih got a fairly large area because he cut up the horse's carcass and spread it as far as he could. That is the origin of the Tenganan Village area.
