Kopi Luwak is the most exclusive (and most expensive) coffee in the world. The main factor causing high prices is unusual production methods. It is produced from coffee beans that have been partially digested by Indonesian palm civets and then excreted. Yes, it sounds a bit gross, but don't worry! The outer layer of the coffee bean is removed during processing and the remaining coffee beans are completely cleaned before being roasted and shipped to you.
Despite misunderstandings, Kopi Luwak is not actually a type of coffee, but rather a method of production. Therefore, the taste can vary greatly depending on the source of the coffee beans and the roasting process. Our beans come from the Pangalengan Highlands of West Java, Indonesia, the original and best location for Kopi Luwak production. Our coffee beans are roasted with a medium roast because we think this provides the best taste.
What does Kaya Kopi Luwak taste like? It doesn't taste bitter and is very aromatic. It has a complex flavor profile that is smooth, earthy and sweet with hints of chocolate.
Please note: Due to the immense popularity of Kopi Luwak, some plantations breed civets, sometimes in miserable conditions, to produce Kopi Luwak. Apart from being inhumane, this also causes low quality coffee because the civet's digestive system is damaged due to an unbalanced diet. Part of the magic of Kopi Luwak comes from the healthy enzymes from the civet. If the diet is inefficient, this enzymatic process will not be efficient. At Kaya Kopi, all our ferrets live 100% cage-free and healthy.
